City

Darwin, Australia

A remote and regional city in the 'Top End' of Australia.

There is currently a very transient and multi-cultural population of around 120,000 in the greater Darwin area. We live in a tropical savannah climate, with two main seasons - Wet and Dry. Larrakia people are the traditional Aboriginal owners of the greater Darwin area.

For non-Indigenous artists, Darwin is often overlooked on the national and international art stage, in favour of the big cities down the south of Australia. However Indigenous art across the Top End (most notably from Arnhemland) is internationally recognised.

Some distance facts that often surprise:
Darwin is 3,144 kilometres (1,954 miles) away from Australia's capital, Canberra.

Darwin is closer to capitals of other countries in Asia & the Pacific:
Dili (East Timor) is 656 kms (408 miles) away,
Port Moresby (Papua New Guinea) is 1,818 kms (1,130 miles) away,
Jakarta (Indonesia) is 2,735 kms (1,699 miles) away,
Bandar Seri Begawan (Brunei) is 2,607 kms (1,620 miles) away, and
Melekeok (Palau) is 2,247 kms (1,396 miles) away.

And only slightly further away from:
Singapore at 3,360 kms (2,088 miles),
Manila (Philippines) at 3,206 kms (1,992 miles), and Honiara (Solomon Islands) at 3,198 kms (1,987 miles).
