Melbourne’s city centre and the inner suburbs to the north are Melbourne to me.
Steer clear of the suburban sprawl and stick to the inner regions and you will find plenty of gem cafes, bars, galleries and gardens. These areas are also filled with typical Melbournian Victorian architecture from grand old department stores in the central business district to miniature workers cottages packed together in rows down small industrial/residential mixed zone areas. There is a distinct division between what northside and what is southside meaning north or south of the Yarra river. Stick to the north side or things can get ugly or just plain boring. While its not my favourite city in the world, it’s home and the northside lifestyle is nothing to complain about. Great bars and cafes, some good art spaces, book stores etc. Relaxed. Cool. Very easy going. The food and coffee are great and affordable. Most northsiders love Europe, so if you’re a European traveller you will hopefully score invites to some nice house parties. We are a friendly bunch.
